North Sea and coast
Husum
approx. 20 minutes · all year
The “grey town by the sea” is our closest destination and good for half a day. Colourful gabled houses line the inner harbour, and the old town has small shops and cafés. In March, millions of crocuses bloom in the castle park, a special sight. On rainy days the Theodor Storm House and the North Sea Museum are worth a visit.
North Sea dyke at the Husum Dockkoog
approx. 25 minutes · all year
The quickest way to the North Sea: walk along the top of the dyke, look out over the mudflats and salt marshes, watch the sheep. In summer there is a bathing spot here, and in February the Husum Biike bonfire is lit here.
St. Peter-Ording
approx. 1 hour · all year
The wide sandy beach stretching for kilometres, with its stilt houses, is the best-known destination on the west coast. At the Westküstenpark children can see seals and other animals, and in bad weather the Dünen-Therme pool is the place to go. Tip: in autumn and winter the beach is almost empty.
Westerhever lighthouse
approx. 1 hour · all year
The red-and-white lighthouse in the middle of the salt marshes is one of the best-known photo motifs on the North Sea. From the car park it is a short walk over the dyke. Easy to combine with St. Peter-Ording.
Tönning and the Multimar Wattforum
approx. 40 minutes · all year
Tönning has a pretty harbour on the Eider. At the Multimar Wattforum, the visitor centre of the Wadden Sea National Park, large aquariums show life in the North Sea. Ideal for families and rainy days.
Eider Barrage

The barrage at the mouth of the Eider is one of Germany’s largest coastal protection structures. Exciting for anyone interested in engineering, with views over the North Sea and the river.
Swimming in the North Sea: Holmer Siel and Lüttmoorsiel
approx. 35–45 minutes · summer
Two quiet bathing spots on the Wadden Sea, away from the bustle of the big resorts. Note: swimming in the North Sea is only possible around high tide, so check the tide tables first.
Beltringharder Koog
approx. 40 minutes · autumn to spring
A nature reserve between Husum and Nordstrand with a bird-watching hide. In autumn and spring huge flocks of barnacle geese and other migratory birds rest here. Don’t forget your binoculars.
Islands and Halligen
Nordstrand and Pellworm
approx. 40 minutes to Strucklahnungshörn · spring to autumn
Nordstrand is a peninsula you can reach by car. From the ferry pier at Strucklahnungshörn a ferry takes you on to the island of Pellworm, quiet and ideal for cycling.
The Halligen from Schlüttsiel
approx. 40 minutes to Schlüttsiel · spring to autumn
The Halligen are small islands without dykes; the houses stand on artificial mounds called warfts. Boats leave the harbour at Schlüttsiel for the Halligen Hooge and Langeneß. A trip you can only experience here.
Föhr and Amrum from Dagebüll
approx. 50 minutes to Dagebüll · spring to autumn
Ferries run from Dagebüll to Föhr and Amrum. Föhr is green and relaxed, Amrum has one of the widest sandy beaches on the North Sea. Start early for a day trip.
Sylt by car train
approx. 45 minutes to Niebüll · all year
In Niebüll you drive your car onto the train, which crosses the Hindenburg Causeway to Westerland. On Sylt, the Red Cliff near Kampen, the Frisian village of Keitum and long beaches await.
Towns and culture

This “little Dutch town” was founded in the 17th century by Dutch religious refugees. Canals, stepped gables and small bridges, plus canal boat trips in summer. In Advent there is a Christmas market.
Schleswig, Gottorf Castle and Hedeby
approx. 40 minutes · all year
At Gottorf Castle the state museums show art and history, and the cathedral and the Schlei are close by. On the other side of the Schlei lies Hedeby (Haithabu), a Viking settlement and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Viking Museum and the reconstructed houses bring its history to life. A day that adults and children enjoy equally.
Flensburg
approx. 30 minutes · all year
The harbour town on the Flensburg Fjord has a long pedestrian street, old merchants’ courtyards and a museum harbour with sailing ships. With children, the Phänomenta is worth a visit, a hands-on museum of science and technology.

Cycling
from the front door · spring to autumn
Around Brook it is flat and quiet: farm tracks, small villages and lots of sky. The Eider-Treene-Sorge cycle route passes through the region. You can find tours nearby on Komoot, for example.
Our tips
- Mind the tides: on the North Sea everything changes with ebb and flood. Check the tide tables before swimming, mudflat walks and ferries.
- Book ferries and the car train in advance: in summer the ferries to Föhr, Amrum and Pellworm and the Sylt car train are often full.
- Mudflat walks only with a guide: guided tours are offered by the Schutzstation Wattenmeer and the local tourist offices, for example.
- In winter: you will find plenty of ideas for the cold season in our guide Winter holiday on the North Sea with a fireplace.
