Biike bonfires 2027 in North Frisia: date, places near Husum and tips
Every year on the evening of 21 February, large bonfires are lit along the North Frisian coast, on the islands and on the Halligen. The Biikebrennen is the region’s most important winter tradition. In 2027 it falls on a Sunday. Here is where the fires burn near Husum and how to enjoy the evening.

What is the Biikebrennen?
“Biike” is Frisian and means beacon or fire signal. The fires are lit on the eve of St. Peter’s Day (22 February). According to tradition, they were once used to bid farewell to the seafarers and whalers who set off on their voyages in spring. Today the fire mainly stands for driving out the winter. Since 2014 the Biikebrennen has been on Germany’s national register of intangible cultural heritage.
The evening runs much the same way almost everywhere: people gather at dusk, often there is a short Biike speech, sometimes in Frisian or Low German. Then the big pile of wood, brushwood and old Christmas trees is lit. Everyone stands together by the fire, drinks punch or mulled wine, and later goes on to a kale dinner.
Where do the Biike fires burn around Husum?
More than 60 places in North Frisia celebrate the Biikebrennen on the same evening. These are within reach of our house in Brook:
| Place | How it went in 2026 | Driving time from Brook |
|---|---|---|
| Husum, dyke at the Dockkoog | Gathering from 6 pm, lighting at 6:30 pm, Biike speech, music by the fire brigade band. Free shuttle from the harbour car park. | approx. 25 min |
| Schobüll (Husum) | Biike fire in the Husum district on the coast north of the town. Please check the time with the organisers. | approx. 25 min |
| Nordstrand, Süderhafen | Music and drinks from 5 pm, lighting at 6 pm. Parking at the Süderhafen, bus 1041 from Husum. | approx. 32 min |
| St. Peter-Ording | Torchlight procession from 6 pm from the Erlebnis-Hus, fire lit at around 6:30 pm on the square in front of the pier. | approx. 60 min |
The times are from the 2026 Biikebrennen. The exact programmes for 2027 are usually published by Husum Tourismus, the municipality of Nordstrand and St. Peter-Ording in January or February. In a storm, a fire may be postponed at short notice.
Kale dinner after the fire
The Biikebrennen goes hand in hand with a kale dinner: kale with smoked pork, sausage and pork cheek, served with potatoes, often caramelised in the north, and a glass of aquavit. Many inns in Husum, on Nordstrand and on Eiderstedt serve kale on this evening.
Important: tables get booked up fast on this evening. It is best to reserve in January. If you prefer to cook yourself: our house has a well-equipped kitchen, and kale tastes just as good by the wood-burning stove.
Tips for the evening
- Dress warmly: there is almost always wind on the dyke. Bring a hat, gloves and sturdy shoes.
- Arrive early: parking near the fires is limited. In Husum the shuttle is worth using.
- Bring a torch: the way back over the dyke is dark.
- With children: some places hold a torchlight procession, for example St. Peter-Ording. For children this is often the best part of the evening. Keep your distance from the fire, sparks fly in the wind.
A long weekend around 21 February
As the Biikebrennen falls on a Sunday in 2027, a weekend from Friday to Monday works well. Ideas for the other days:
- Saturday: watch barnacle geese in the Beltringharder Koog, then stroll through Husum’s old town.
- Sunday: visit the Multimar Wattforum in Tönning at midday, the Biike fire in the evening.
- Monday: sleep in, walk through Friedrichstadt with its canals, drive home.
